necessary evils?

My son loves baseball, specifically the Blue Jays. He used to like the Mariners, but I guess his time on the east coast, converted him. I asked him this pointed question, specifically about umpiring, i.e., whether it bothered him that commentators never question a call. I believe it has everything to do with the fact that baseball of all sports could get rid of umpires altogether, if they chose. However, they've been deemed part of the game, therefore whatever call, right or wrong, is THE CALL and THE MAN (Bud Selig) says, "So, There"! Talk about a pressure free job. When I was a child umpires were considered a necessary evil and a call would be replayed to see if it was blown. Admittedly, it's not as bad as basketball, which has phantom calls, phantom clocks or in the case of a Jordanesque player no call, but still...
